Our Government has lately been blathering about the fact that Italy cannot be unique in dealing with special protection, i.e. that particular form of acceptance of refugees who are not granted refugee status or who can be offered subsidiary protection, but nevertheless cannot be sent back to the country of origin because in this case it would suffer persecution. Italy is not the only one to offer this special protection, but there are well over a dozen European countries that already apply this legislation.
